K-12 Maritime Education Programs

MARAD in International Code Flags

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) is responsible for ensuring mariners receive the training and education necessary to secure and strengthen the quality of U.S. maritime operations at sea and ashore. K-12 schools play an integral role in reaching and inspiring the next generation of mariners. MARAD works with schools, industry, and government partners to foster interest in maritime education and connect potential students with educational and training institutions.

Maritime K-12 education programs included here generally:

·       Provide students with maritime skills that may lead directly to employment in the maritime industry, or enable them to further their education at a maritime-oriented college or vocational/technical school;

·       Offer courses taught by certified Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructors in afloat and ashore career tracks, and some combination of courses on general seagoing operations (e.g., deck, engineering, etc.);

·       Position a student to earn credentials required to obtain afloat positions in the maritime industry, such as the Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) and U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). These credentials are valuable assets for those considering entry into a vocational or collegiate-level program, including one of the six State Maritime Academies, and/or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Please reach out to MARAD’s Maritime Training and Education team acareersafloat@dot.gov if you would like us to consider adding your school’s program to this listing.

You can also explore the K-12 programs using our K-12 Maritime Education Interactive Map.
