VADM (USN Ret.) Al Herberger

On behalf of the Maritime Administration, we are saddened to hear of the recent passing of former Maritime Administrator, Vice Admiral Al Herberger, and our sincerest condolences go to his family and loved ones during this time. VADM Herberger served as Administrator from September 14, 1993 to June 30, 1997, and was a US Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) alum and the first Kings Point graduate to attain a three-star rank in the Navy. A 35-year Navy veteran, he was a stalwart merchant mariner. During his tenure as MARAD’s Administrator, he led efforts to implement the enactment of the 1993 National Shipbuilding Initiative and the Maritime Security Act of 1996. He had a long, successful maritime career, and was often described as someone who “stood tall yet remained approachable and friendly.” We will forever remain inspired by his leadership and his impact on the maritime community.
