U.S. Marine Highway Route Designation Process

Submit a Route for Consideration

Designation of a Marine Highway Route is the first step towards reducing landside congestion by focusing public and private efforts on increasing the amount of freight transported on commercially navigable waterways and is a prerequisite for eligibility into the U.S. Marine Highway Program. Marine Highway Route suggestions may be made to the Department of Transportation at any time.  Further information on Marine Highway Routes is located in the Final Rule in the Federal Register. The Secretary will review promising route suggestions and declare those official Marine Highway Routes on a case-by-case basis.
