Feasibility Study of Replacing the R/V Robert Gordon Sproul with a Hybrid Vessel Employing Zero-emission Propulsion Technology
This feasibility study assesses the applicability and design of hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion technology for a research vessel targeted as a replacement for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) R/V Robert Gordon Sproul. General parameters of the study included vessel performance (scientific and instructional activities), budget, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and regulatory compliance. As in previous studies, the design complies with the existing international code for low-flash point fuels, and the project would help advance development of Federal and state standards and codes for such applications.
