Modeling Tools & Resources
SAFE-T Web-based Toolset
MARAD partnered with Energy and Environmental Research Associates, LLC. (EERA) to design and create the Ship Alternative Fuel and Emissions Toolkit (SAFE-T), a web-based suite of tools for vessel owner/operators to use when considering actions to reduce emissions. SAFE-T provides tools enabling shippers to track fuel use and emissions, compare the energy intensity of different shipping routes, and compare properties of conventional and alternative marine fuels. SAFE-T is a user-friendly, web-based suite of tools that allow users to evaluate emission strategies for shipping. SAFE-T was built from a robust blend of literature analysis, evaluation of comparable tools, input from stakeholders, and comprehensive examination of key subject matter experts. SAFE-T is built on international standards and methodologies. The website for the program is www.safet.io and additional information is included in the resources and FAQs (FAQ - SAFE-T (safet.io)).
Global Routing Energy and Emissions Network for Transportation Model
We have partnered with EERA to create a new web-based multimodal optimization tool known as this the Global Routing Energy and Emissions Network for Transportation Model. The tool will build upon the now defunct Web-based Geospatial Intermodal Freight Transportation (WebGIFT) network model that went online in 2014. WebGIFT was originally designed by the EERA principals to solve for minimizing travel time, distance, and emissions across multiple modes (rail, road, water) based on user-selected origin and destination locations. This new tool will be a user-friendly and built upon current best practices and standards.
IMO Expert Workshop on Energy Efficiency and Underwater Noise from Ships
An expert workshop was held on 18-19 September 2023 to examine growing opportunities to tackle greenhouse gas emissions and harmful underwater radiated noise in tandem. Co-chaired by Canada, France and the United States of America. Includes background documents and expert presentations.
